Ryan Giggs: “Ive read about Thierry Henry and the abuse Marcus Bent and others have been getting. It is something that shouldnt be happening in football because weve moved on so much. It is hard because, especially in Europe, racism is always going to be there. Because in some leagues they dont have many black players and they dont see black players as often as we do in the Premiership. So black players become the target of abuse.” Ian Wright: “I think with jealous people its the easiest thing in the world to say a racist comment to a black player. I also get a lot of bad letters, I dont read them any more because they distress me. Those people are just sick, I havent done anything to them so I just say to myself, theyre just stupid, ignorant people. I couldnt even imagine what it would be like in Cyril Regis and Laurie Cunninghams day because I wouldnt take it, but I suppose it was harder for them to speak out then - and that is why Id now take any opportunity to speak that I can.” Curtis Flemming: "I think its definitely improved but its still not out of the game, you still hear it nearly every week, the chants, at some game or another, or some player getting abused whether its a French guy or a black guy or a Chinese guy, its definitely not out of the game."
Kevin Campbell: "We don´t want racists in football. We are sick and tired of what they are saying, going over the same dead wood. We don´t want that stench around football." Sailhou Sarr: Sarr opplevde rasisme i norsk fotball. John Barnes: “When I first came to Liverpool, I was shocked when I walked along Church Street because there were so few black people working in the shops. In London it was totally different. Now, like most British cities, Liverpool has changed for the better and there are many more black people prominent in everyday life. The way to marginalise groups like the BNP is through education and integration.” Ashley Cole: “I think, luckily for me, I have a great job playing football. But if you look at the Arsenal team you have Thierry Henry who is French. Lauren who is from Cameroon. We have players from the Ivory Coast. Weve got everyone: Swedish, German and of course English. So weve got every culture there, we all get along well. And hopefully we can show people that we can all get along without fighting and calling each other names.” Sven Göran Eriksson: “Racism has nothing to do with football and it shouldnt exist in any country. What colour your skin is does not matter, what we want to see when we go to football is good football. We want to see a lot of goals being scored. Whether the person who scores the goals is black, yellow or white or red, does not matter. Enjoy the football. Myself as a manager, I never think about whether the player is black or white. I think, is he a good player? Colour shouldnt be important and for most people it isnt important at all.”
